This month’s speaker, Darrin Thompson considers himself a game changer.  With years of experience in communications for Junior B Hockey in Alberta, an active media/pr role on the Executive Board of the Alberta Football League, Retail marketing, Not for Profit Sector, Darrin brings a lifetime of knowledge to SMBRD. After a brief reminder about the importance of donating blood (he’s currently Territory Manager of Canadian Blood Services & Business Development Specialist), he shared his tips to success.

DEFINITION of ‘Game Changer’ 1. A person who is a visionary. 2. A company that alters its business strategy and conceives an entirely new business plan.

Success Tip 1: The only thing in life you ever need to sell is yourself
Success Tip 2: Someone who achieves early benefits through a forced action will ultimately cost the organization more financially
Success Tip 3:
Any negative or aggressive social media interaction will effect your personal or professional brand even slightly
Success Tip 4:
Timing is Everything!! If Plan A doesn’t bring success, Move on with a Plan B or C to finish the task even if plan A is better idea. Plan A if a great idea can always be used at a future time usually for a larger success
Success Tip 5:
So What Now What?? (Although not the most popular phrase with supervisors and organizations, I always say “I was looking for an opportunity when I found this one”   Network constantly, it’s always easier to find another opportunity when you already hold one, and the percentage of organizations and decision makers hiring and utilizing people they know or are familiar with is higher than not)

Along with his talk, Darrin brought along four sets of tickets to the Lacombe Athletic Park Association Gala to giveaway to some lucky attendees. Who doesn’t love a giveaway?
